#FridayReads 2024-02-23 – A Speculative Fiction Week -‘A Quiet Rebellion: Restitution’, ‘Camp Zero’ and ‘The Dawn Of The Lightbearer’

This week, I’m heading off into speculative fiction land with two books from my TBR pile and one new acquisition. One book continues a trilogy that I started last year, One kicks off a new series and one is a standalone.

One is being heavily pushed by Hodder & Stoughton. The other two are independently published.

I’m hoping each of them will give me a lot to think about and provide me with an engaging story.

A Quiet Rebellion: Restitution by M. H. Thaung (2022)

I read ‘A Quiet Rebellion: Guilt‘ book one in the Numoeath trilogy last year and knew that I had to read the rest of the trilogy. The first book felt like a strong pilot for a series. The ending wasn’t a cliffhanger but it did throw in a big enough change that I knew the lives of the main characters were going to be disrupted and the status quo would be challenged. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next.

M.H. Thaung is a British author who has published five speculative fiction novels: The Numoeath Trilogy, The Diamond Device  and The Sapphire Solution
She was born in Scotland and has moved progressively southwards throughout her career.
She now works in a biomedical science research institute in London, England. She loves her job and academic writing (where she publishes as C. Thaung.

‘Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling (2023)

I’m drawn to ‘Camp Zero’ because it sounds like it’s a speculative fiction book that helps us to imagine some of the near-future challenges that will face us as climate change bites. It also sounds like a good thriller with a strong character at it centre.

Michelle Min Sterling is the author of Camp Zero.
Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, she now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts and teaches creative writing and literature at Berklee College of Music.
Her writing has been translated into ten languages.

‘The Dawn Of The Lightbearer’ by Scott Austin Tirrell (2021)

I love a good quest story, especially if the world-building is strong. I’m hoping that ‘The Dawn Of The Lightbearer’ will kickoff a series that I’ll keep coming back to.

Scott Austin Tirrell is an American author based out of Boston. He is the author of five novels:  Island of Stone,  The Slaying of the Bull, a Historical Fiction, three books in the epic dark fantasy series Absolution of the Morning Star– Dawn of the LightbearerThe Mourning Son, and Noonday in the North.

  1. I read Camp Zero last year & called it a “stunning debut” in my own book log. I especially liked the sections about White Alice, the all-female research team; I think you will too.

    • Thank you. I’ve started it and I’m immediately wrapped up in the action. I like that it follows straight on from the first book with no let up in pace.
