Memories of November sunshine on a drear day

It’s a dark, wet, wuthering day today. The wind seems vexed. The sky is gray and louring. The rain offers only a a slow dismal drenching with no compensating drama. So I’m doing the sensible: staying indoors and calling up memories of better times. Yesterday in fact.

Yesterday’s sky was a deep, cloudless blue. The cold was bitter. The sunshine offered light without warmth but worked its magic by making everything look at its best.

We went for a walk around the Bath Spa University campus at Newton Park, set in the hills to the west of Bath. The Park, which is leased from the Duchy of Cornwall, was set out by Capability Brown and and is designed to provide splendid views.

Here’s what we saw:

The remains of Newton St Loe Castle, a fortified manor: the 14th-century keep and 15th-century gatehouse
A woodland path that leads from the lake to the Halls of Residence
A landscaped path at the edge of the lake
A quiet spot to sit and take in the view
