Europe needs a united response to the new USA National Security Strategy.
The UK needs to recognise that its main allies are across the channel, not across the Atlantic.
I interpret the USA’s strategic national security goals in Europe as being:
Support Russia
End NATO
Undermine the EU
Interfere directly to change the direction of European politics.
This does not read as the strategy of an ally, but rather that of a wannabe overlord.
In November, the USA published its new National Security Strategy. You can find a copy HERE.
This strategy document declares itself to be “President Trump’s welcome, necessary correction” to the Security Strategies of earlier regimes, which had “gone astray”.
This is a clear, well-thought-through document that sets out to provide the answers to three questions:
1) What should the United States want?
2) What are our available means to get it? and
3) How can we connect ends and means into a viable National Security Strategy?
It’s a document that we in Europe need to read with care and plan a response to. It changes the rules, invalidates long-held assumptions, and makes clear how America will put itself first in all its dealings with allies and enemies alike.
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Maya Angelou
Below, I’ve given my interpretation of the what the strategy on Europe means, followed by the text from the strategy document that I base that interpretation on,
The USA believes European governments are unstable, trample on basic principles of democracy to suppress opposition, and are incapable of reforming themselves.

The USA believes the EU undermines political liberty and sovereignty, creates strife, censors free speech, and suppresses political opponents.
It questions whether European countries can remain reliable allies.
It wants Europe to change direction.

The USA will prioritise:
Appeasing Russia
Withdrawing from NATO
‘Cultivating resistance’ to the EU within European nations
End EU consumer protection and trade barriers
Buy influence in Central and Southern Europe
Stop NATO expansion
Stop the EU from standing up to US companies, e.g., Tech giants
