40 years ago – sometimes feels like another life, sometimes feels like it happened yesterday

I’ve been reading books where the main character is seeking revenge for something that happened 20 years ago. This is almost always presented as if it is an enormous length of time, certainly too long to hold a grudge. whereas my response (after a little bit of mental arithmetic) is “That’s not THAT long. It’s still this century. I’d still be ready for revenge for something done to me in 2004”.

Then I read books set in 1980 and presented as historical fiction with the all-this-happened-before-they-were-born author being congratulated on the accuracy of their ‘period’ details and I’m thinking, “I was there for that. It didn’t feel like history at the time.

Anyway, today my sense of time was poked at by a Tweet containing photos from a Rolling Stone photoshoot that Carrie Fisher did in 1983. I looked at the pictures and smiled. When I first saw those pictures, I didn’t think of her as young because I was young myself (she was born three months ahead of me). Now I look at her and see so much youth and fun and energy. Then, after a moment or two, I remember that she’s already been dead for more than seven years and it doesn’t seem possible. When did I get so old?

Anyway, for those of you who can also time travel forty years using only your memories, here are the pictures that made me smile.

The original tweet is HERE

  1. This post echoed in my soul…. a couple of years ago a was reading a book that was classified as Historical Fiction, and I was horrified to find it was set in the 1980’s! Who’s making up these categories?

You also got me thinking about my favourite authors, films, tv shows, and music, and the number of artists/creators/authors and actors that have already passed was piling high. Half of my family have already ventured into the great beyond. It’s an odd place to be when your mind is sharp and you still feel young, but when you look back at the expanse of time and everything you’ve achieved – should you be feeling old, or ready to take on another challenge?

I guess I’m just happy to be here an take pleasure in all the small moments.

    • I’m glad it resonated with you. So much that’s written about getting older seems to be about denying that it’s happening rather than sharing what it means. I am who I am because I was born way back in the last century. Who I will be tomorrow depends on what this century has to offer, or at least the next decade of it 😀.

Enjoy your small moments. I wish you many of them.
